What It Costs to Get Back In

Ask yourself one question before selling: would I buy this metal back at today's price? If the answer is yes, you do not want to sell it. You want cash, and that is a different problem.

No credit check and no obligation. If borrowing is the wrong answer for your situation, you will be told that first.

What it actually means

Rebuilding a position means paying the market at whatever level it is at when you have the money, plus the dealer premium, plus whatever the metal did in between. People consistently underestimate this because they mentally price the repurchase at the price they sold for. It is almost never that price.

The specifics

  • You repurchase at tomorrow's market, not at the price you sold for.
  • Premium is paid again on the way back in.
  • The gap between selling and rebuilding is usually longer than planned.
  • Many people simply never rebuild, and the position quietly ends.

The counter

Where this argument is weak

If you do not intend to rebuild, this cost is zero and you should ignore it entirely. Be honest with yourself about which it is.

FAQ

Common questions

What if prices fall after I sell?
Then selling was the better decision and you rebuild cheaper. Nobody can tell you in advance which way it goes, including us.
How long do people take to rebuild?
Longer than they intend, in our experience. The cash gets used and the repurchase keeps moving down the list.
Is borrowing always cheaper than selling?
No. Below the minimum, on a short horizon, or where you do not want the metal anyway, selling is cheaper and simpler.
Can you buy my metal if I decide to sell?
Yes. We buy at the counter in Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood, tested and weighed in front of you, priced against live spot.
