Every row marked “wins here” is a real advantage of the alternative, and on this site the alternative wins a lot of them. A comparison where the lender wins every row is an advertisement.
The fair case
What selling then buying back genuinely does better
Selling now and repurchasing later is the maneuver people most often have in mind when they say they will replace it, and it does have a real advantage: complete flexibility. No obligation exists in the meantime, nothing can be called, and if the price falls you buy back cheaper and come out ahead of where you started. If you have a firm view that metal is about to weaken, this is the position that benefits from being right.
The limit
Where the gap is
It is a bet, and it is usually not recognized as one. You are out of the market between the two transactions, so a rise costs you twice — once on the gain you did not get, and again on the higher price you pay to rebuild. You also pay a spread on both legs, so the price has to move in your favor just to break even. And the buy-back is the step that quietly does not happen: the money gets used, the moment passes, and a holding built over years is not reassembled. If you would not deliberately choose to be out of metal for that period, this is not a plan, it is a hope.
Our view
The honest verdict
This works when metal falls between your sale and your repurchase, and it costs you when it rises — which is a coin flip dressed up as a plan. The bigger issue is behavioural: in our experience the repurchase is postponed, then postponed again, and often never happens. If you are confident you will rebuild, price the round trip honestly first. If you are honest that you might not, you were selling the position, not timing it.
